endoplasmic reticulum

Protein synthesis network

The endoplasmic reticulum is a network of membrane-enclosed tubes and sacs within cells, essential for producing proteins and lipids.

It comes in two forms: rough endoplasmic reticulum, studded with ribosomes that synthesize proteins, and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, which lacks ribosomes and handles lipid production and detoxification.

Often abbreviated ER in biology contexts, it functions as a cellular factory and transport system, channeling materials to other parts of the cell.
