lodestones

Magnetic iron ore

Lodestones are naturally magnetized pieces of the mineral magnetite, capable of attracting iron.

Before artificial magnets, lodestones were used in early compasses for navigation.

The name comes from an old word meaning "way" or "course"—a stone that leads.

Figuratively, a lodestone is anything that powerfully attracts: She became a lodestone for progressive activists.
