spinel
Octahedral oxide mineral
Spinel is a hard mineral occurring in various colors, valued as a gemstone.
Red spinels have historically been confused with rubies—several famous "rubies" in crown jewels are actually spinels.
The word also refers to a class of minerals sharing the same crystal structure: The Black Prince's Ruby is in fact a spinel.
