orient

Get one's bearings

To orient is to position or align something in relation to a reference point—originally, toward the east where the sun rises.

Maps are oriented with north at the top.

You orient yourself by figuring out where you are: It took me a minute to orient myself in the unfamiliar neighborhood.

To orient someone is to familiarize them with a new situation: The training program orients new employees.

Orient also means to direct toward a particular interest or goal: a service-oriented business, career-oriented students. (Capitalized Orient is a dated term for East Asia.)
