diorite
Coarse igneous rock
Diorite is a coarse-grained igneous rock, gray to dark gray, composed mainly of plagioclase feldspar and darker minerals like hornblende.
It forms when magma cools slowly beneath the earth's surface.
Harder than granite, diorite was prized by ancient sculptors—many Egyptian statues were carved from it.
The countertop was polished diorite.
