siderite

Brownish iron ore

Siderite is an iron carbonate mineral, brownish or yellowish, found in sedimentary rocks and valued as an iron ore.

The term also names a class of iron meteorites composed almost entirely of metal.

In older usage, siderite referred to lodestone—magnetic iron ore used in early compasses.
