specific gravity
Relative density measurement
Specific gravity is the ratio of a substance's density to the density of a reference substance, usually water for liquids and solids, air for gases.
A specific gravity greater than 1 means the substance is denser than water and will sink; less than 1 means it floats.
The term appears in brewing, geology, and medicine: The urine sample showed elevated specific gravity.
