mica

Sheets that shimmer

Mica is a mineral that occurs in thin, translucent sheets that can be peeled apart into flexible layers.

These sheets have a distinctive sparkle and were historically used in windows, lamp chimneys, and electrical insulation before synthetic alternatives became available.

Today mica appears most commonly in cosmetics, where its shimmer adds luster to eyeshadows and body glitters, and in industrial applications requiring heat resistance.

The rock was flecked with bits of mica.
