reduction

Cutting something down

Reduction is the act of making something smaller or less.

A reduction in price, in force, in scope.

The word applies to many domains: in cooking, a reduction is a sauce thickened by boiling off liquid; in chemistry, reduction is the gain of electrons (opposite of oxidation); in surgery, reducing a fracture means realigning broken bones.

To reduce something to rubble is to destroy it completely.
