taconite

Minnesota iron rock

Taconite is a hard, fine-grained sedimentary rock containing iron ore, found primarily in the Lake Superior region of North America.

The iron content is lower than in richer ores, requiring processing to extract usable iron pellets.

Taconite mining became economically viable in the mid-20th century as higher-grade iron deposits were depleted: The Minnesota Iron Range shifted to taconite production in the 1950s.
