limonite
Yellowish iron ore
Limonite is a yellowish-brown iron ore, actually a mixture of iron oxide minerals rather than a single mineral.
It forms through weathering of other iron-bearing minerals and gives many soils and rocks their rusty color.
Historically important as a pigment (yellow ochre) and iron source, though less valued than purer ores: The cliff face was stained with limonite.
