calcite
Marble's main component
Calcite is a crystalline mineral composed of calcium carbonate, one of the most common minerals on Earth.
It forms limestone, marble, and chalk, and is the main component of stalactites and stalagmites in caves.
Calcite often appears colorless or white but can occur in various colors depending on impurities.
It has distinctive optical properties—a clear variety called Iceland spar produces double refraction, making text viewed through it appear doubled.
