hematite
Metallic gray mineral
Hematite is an iron ore mineral, the principal source of iron for steelmaking.
It typically appears steel-gray to black with a metallic luster, though it leaves a distinctive reddish-brown streak when scratched against a surface.
The reddish color comes from iron oxide—the same compound in rust.
Hematite is also polished into jewelry and decorative objects: a hematite bracelet, hematite beads.
