bauxite
Primary aluminum ore
Bauxite is the principal ore from which aluminum is extracted—a reddish-brown rock rich in aluminum oxides.
It forms in tropical climates through weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks.
The name comes from Les Baux, France, where it was first identified.
Jamaica and Australia are major bauxite producers.
