magnetic stripe

Swipeable data strip

A magnetic stripe is the dark band on the back of credit cards, ID badges, and similar cards that stores data readable by swiping through a machine.

The technology dates to the 1960s and is gradually being replaced by chip-based systems, though many cards still carry both: The magnetic stripe on my card is worn out.
