catalysis
Speeding chemical change
Catalysis is a chemical process in which a substance speeds up a reaction without being consumed by it.
The substance that does this is a catalyst.
Enzymes perform catalysis in biological systems; industrial processes rely on metal catalysts.
Figuratively, catalysis describes any force that accelerates change: Her speech was the catalysis for the movement.
