sole

Flatfish or exclusive

Sole has two distinct origins in English.

One gives us the underside of a foot or shoe, and by extension, the flat bottom surface of things like golf clubs or irons.

The other gives us the adjective meaning only or singular: the sole survivor, sole proprietor, sole custody.

A sole is also a flatfish prized for delicate flavor.
