tread
Sole's contact surface
Meanings of tread mostly have to do with contact of something with the ground.
To tread in a particular way (lightly, carefully, cautiously) is to walk that way.
A path or trail that is trodden has been walked on.
When you tread water, however, you are simply trying to stay afloat.
The noun tread can refer to the ground-facing surface of a tire or shoe.
Tread is also an instance or manner of treading.
The part of a stair that you put your foot on is a tread.
