punt

Flat-bottomed vessel

Punt has several distinct meanings.

In football, a punt is a kick where the ball is dropped and struck before it hits the ground: The punter boomed a fifty-yard punt.

In boating, a punt is a flat-bottomed boat propelled by pushing a pole against the riverbed, common on English rivers: punting on the Thames.

To punt also means to postpone or avoid a decision: Let's punt on that question until the next meeting.

In gambling, especially British usage, to punt is to bet: I punted twenty quid on the match.
