tarsus

Seven ankle bones

The tarsus is the cluster of small bones forming the ankle and heel in humans, or the corresponding segment in other vertebrates.

In birds, the tarsus is the lower leg bone visible above the foot.

Insects have tarsi—the segmented end portions of their legs.

Anatomists use the term for any similar skeletal structure in the ankle region. (Capitalized Tarsus is an ancient city.)
