chieftaincy

Leader's official position

Chieftaincy is the position or office of a chieftain—the leader of a clan, tribe, or similar group.

The term also refers to the territory under a chieftain's authority or the system of governance itself: The chieftaincy passed to his eldest son.

In parts of Africa and the Pacific, chieftaincies remain significant political and cultural institutions alongside modern governments.
