policy
Adopted course forward
The various meanings of policy seem intuitively related and effectively disguise the fact the policy is really two words.
One of them has a single sense—the document that represents a contract of insurance.
The other policy is a proposed or habitual course of action for dealing with a particular matter; a large one (foreign policy, environmental policy), or a small one (policy regarding habitual tardiness, policy of never checking email after 5:00).
The frequent phrase official policy typically designates a documented policy that has arisen out of a formal process.
