tithe

Clergy's traditional share

A tithe is a tenth of one's income or produce, traditionally given to support a church or clergy.

The practice originated as a religious obligation in ancient times and remains part of some faiths today: Members are expected to tithe ten percent of their earnings.

The verb tithe means to pay or collect such a portion.

Extended loosely, tithe can mean any regular contribution to a cause.
