ceremony
Ritualized public event
A ceremony is a formal act or series of acts performed according to established rules or customs, especially to mark significant occasions: a wedding ceremony, a graduation ceremony.
The word extends to elaborate formality in general: the ceremony of a state dinner.
To stand on ceremony is to insist on formalities; without ceremony means unceremoniously or abruptly.
