oversight

Watchful care given

Oversight has two nearly opposite meanings.

The first is watchful supervision: Congressional oversight of intelligence agencies, The board has oversight of financial matters.

The second is an error of inattention—something missed or forgotten: The omission was an oversight, not deliberate.

Context usually makes clear which sense applies.
