edict

Ruler's formal pronouncement

An edict is an official order or decree issued by someone in authority.

The word suggests commands handed down from above—historically from monarchs or governments, now from any powerful figure: The CEO's edict banned personal phones in meetings.

Edicts are pronouncements, not requests; they expect compliance.
