Niger River

West African artery

The Niger River is the principal river of West Africa, flowing roughly 2,600 miles through Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria before emptying into the Gulf of Guinea.

It curves dramatically northward toward the Sahara before bending south—a shape that long puzzled European explorers.

The Niger River delta is one of the world's largest wetlands.
