serfdom

Peasant labor system

Serfdom is the condition of being a serf—a peasant bound to the land they work, owing labor and crops to the landowner.

The system dominated medieval Europe and persisted in Russia until 1861.

Figuratively, serfdom describes any state of bondage or subjugation: Corporate workers joke about their serfdom to the quarterly report.
