dominance

Being on top

Dominance is control or power over others, or the state of being dominant.

In animal behavior, dominance describes hierarchical relationships where some individuals have priority access to resources: The alpha wolf maintained dominance over the pack.

The word applies to competitive situations—market dominance, military dominance—and to personality traits: Her dominance in meetings intimidated colleagues.

In genetics, dominance describes how one allele masks another.
