lore

Tales elders share

Lore is a body of knowledge or tradition passed down through generations, especially through oral transmission rather than formal study: According to local lore, the lake is haunted.

The word often suggests stories, beliefs, and customs accumulated over time within a particular group or about a particular subject: vampire lore, baseball lore, the lore of the sea.

In contemporary usage, lore frequently describes the background mythology of fictional worlds: Star Wars lore, the game's deep lore.
