plaid
Kilt fabric pattern
Plaid is a pattern of crisscrossing horizontal and vertical lines forming a checkered design, most famously associated with Scottish tartans where specific color combinations identify particular clans.
The word also refers to fabric woven in this pattern or garments made from it: a plaid flannel shirt, wearing plaid to the holiday party.
In American English, plaid and tartan are often used interchangeably, though purists distinguish tartan as the authentic Scottish version with clan significance.
