matrix

Rows and columns

A matrix is something that forms the basis or foundation for another thing to arise.

In many cases a matrix is associated with a geographical location: The ancient Middle East is the matrix of at least three of the world’s great religions.

Matrix has very specific meanings in various fields of study, such as biology, metallurgy, and printing.

The common element of meaning is the power or capacity of a matrix to give rise to something new that will eventually be separate.
