chevron

Inverted V shape

A chevron is a V-shaped pattern or mark, pointing up or down.

In military and police uniforms, chevrons on the sleeve indicate rank—the more chevrons, the higher the rank.

Chevrons appear in heraldry, road signs, architecture, and decorative patterns.

The shape suggests direction or movement: Follow the chevrons to the exit. (Capitalized Chevron is the oil company.)
