toile

Plain woven cotton

Toile is a plain-woven fabric, typically linen or cotton, used as a test version of a garment before cutting the final material.

Fashion designers make toiles to check fit and proportion: We'll need to do another toile before the client fitting.

Toile also names a decorative fabric printed with pastoral or narrative scenes, usually in a single color on white or cream—properly called toile de Jouy after the French town where it originated.
