ikat

Pre-weaving dye method

Ikat is a dyeing technique where threads are tie-dyed before weaving to create patterns in the finished fabric.

The word comes from Malay for "to tie." The resulting designs have characteristic soft, feathered edges where colors meet, distinguishing ikat from printed fabrics.

By extension, ikat refers to cloth made this way: a beautiful silk ikat from Uzbekistan.
