dye

Fabric coloring agent

Dye is a substance used to color materials—fabric, hair, food, or other things that absorb it.

Unlike paint, which coats a surface, dye penetrates and bonds chemically: She dyed her hair purple.

The verb and noun share spelling with die, but the continuous forms disambiguate: dying versus dyeing.

A dye job is a hair coloring, sometimes implying it's obvious or poorly done.
