batik

Javanese textile art

Batik is a method of dyeing fabric by applying wax to areas that should remain undyed, then dipping the cloth in color.

The wax resists the dye, creating patterns.

The process can be repeated with different colors for complex designs.

Batik also refers to fabric made this way or the patterns themselves: a batik shirt, Indonesian batik.

The technique originated in Java and spread throughout Southeast Asia.
