intaglio

Sunken design technique

Intaglio is a printmaking technique where the image is incised into a surface, with ink held in the recessed lines rather than on the raised portions.

The term covers etching, engraving, and similar methods.

More broadly, intaglio describes any design cut into a hard material—the opposite of relief or cameo, where the design projects outward: an intaglio seal, an intaglio gem.
