woodblock
Relief printing surface
A woodblock is a block of wood with a design carved into its surface, used for printing.
The artist carves away the areas that should remain blank, leaving raised portions that receive ink and transfer the image to paper.
Woodblock also refers to a print made this way: Japanese woodblocks from the Edo period.
In music, a woodblock is a small rectangular percussion instrument struck with a mallet.
