Stripes are long narrow bands or lines that differ in color or texture from what surrounds them.
They appear on clothing, flags, animals, and surfaces both natural and designed.
A tiger has stripes; so does the American flag.
In military and other uniformed contexts, stripes are insignia indicating rank: She earned her stripes after two years of service.
To earn one's stripes more broadly means to prove oneself through effort or experience.
