woodcarving

Chisel-shaped wooden art

Woodcarving is the art or craft of shaping wood by cutting away material with knives, chisels, or gouges.

The term covers both the activity and the objects produced: She took up woodcarving as a hobby; The mantelpiece was decorated with intricate woodcarvings.

Unlike woodturning, which uses a lathe, woodcarving is done by hand on stationary wood.
