drypoint

Unacidified intaglio technique

Drypoint is a printmaking technique where an image is scratched directly into a metal plate with a sharp needle, without acid etching.

The burr left by the needle holds ink and creates characteristically soft, velvety lines.

The term also refers to a print made this way or the needle itself: a drypoint by Rembrandt.
