calico

Orange-black-white cat

Calico is cotton fabric printed with a colorful pattern, typically small flowers or geometric shapes on a light background.

In American usage, calico especially describes cats with patches of orange, black, and white fur: a calico cat.

The word comes from Calicut, an Indian port city where such fabrics were traded.

As an adjective, calico suggests patchwork coloring or cheap, printed material.
