resist
Refuse to yield
To resist is to push back against something—force, change, temptation, or authority.
You can resist an attacker, resist arrest, or resist the urge to check your phone.
Materials that resist wear or corrosion withstand them.
A person who can't resist something finds it irresistible: I couldn't resist the chocolate cake.
To resist is not necessarily to prevail—only to oppose.
