monotype

One-off print

Monotype refers to a printing process that produces a single unique impression, or the print made by that process.

An artist creates an image on a smooth plate, then transfers it to paper—but unlike other printmaking methods, each print is one of a kind.

In typography, Monotype was also a major system for mechanical typesetting, casting individual letters in hot metal.

The term appears in biology for a genus containing only one species.
