A banner ad is an advertisement displayed as a rectangular graphic on a webpage, typically stretching across the top or bottom of the screen.

Banner ads were among the earliest forms of internet advertising and remain ubiquitous despite notoriously low click-through rates: I accidentally clicked a banner ad and got redirected to some sketchy site.
