Blackbeard

Caribbean terror, 1718

Blackbeard was the nickname of Edward Teach (or Thatch), an English pirate who terrorized the Atlantic coast and Caribbean in the early 18th century.

His thick black beard and fearsome reputation made him the archetypal pirate of popular imagination.

He was killed in 1718 by British naval forces off the coast of North Carolina.

The name now evokes piracy generally: He looked like Blackbeard with that scraggly beard.
