Port Royal

Sunken Jamaican city

Port Royal is a historic Jamaican harbor town that was the Caribbean's wealthiest and most notorious city in the 17th century, serving as a base for English privateers and pirates.

It was largely destroyed by an earthquake in 1692, an event widely interpreted as divine judgment on its wickedness.

The name evokes images of buccaneers, treasure, and maritime lawlessness: Port Royal was the pirate capital of the New World.
