Treasure Island

Buried gold adventure

Treasure Island is a novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, published in 1883, about a young boy who finds a pirate's treasure map and sails in search of buried gold.

The story introduced or popularized enduring pirate tropes: the black spot, X marks the spot, the one-legged sea cook, the parrot on the shoulder.

By extension, any place promising hidden riches or adventure: The antique shop was a treasure island of forgotten curiosities.
