doubloon

Spanish treasure coin

A doubloon is a Spanish gold coin that circulated from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, worth about two escudos.

The word appears most often in pirate stories and treasure-hunting contexts: a chest full of doubloons, buried doubloon.

Outside historical or fictional settings, doubloon sometimes means any gold coin or, loosely, money.
